004: first talking to a therapist (good and bad)
how can we evaluate if they will be a help or hindrance?
Taking the first step to open up when our default mode is shutdown and suppression, potentially being so for decades, is a very fragile moment. If an appropriate space is not held for us, our nervous system screams: ‘See I told you, it’s not safe, we should never have tried that!’
This feels like another abandonment and looks like the signing of another term of our contract for cyclical fate. Our current scripts that took us to non-functionality are rewinded and played all over again.
In this latest episode of the podcast, I share a framework for evaluating our first interactions with a therapist, healer or teacher - based on the Somatic (body-led) tradition. Examples are provided of where I could have been helped but was let down before I was taken under the wing years later by my current therapist (and how that changed everything).
